It was wonderful meeting all of you at this years Career Expo and we’re so happy you’ve landed on our page. This page was designed to offer basic level initial guidance on becoming a private-sector K9 handler and insight on what it’s like to work in this career. Career pathways vary and typically require additional education, training, and professional experience beyond high school. Students should consult parents, guardians, and educators when exploring career options.
We encourage you to visit the rest of our website, starting with our home page to learn more about us!
So what do private detection handlers do?
Private canine detection is a professional, private-sector career focused on safety, responsibility, and trust. Handlers work with trained dogs to locate specific odors—such as explosives, firearms, and narcotics—at schools, hospitals, events, and other facilities. Have you been to a Blazers, Timbers or Thorns game recently? Enjoyed a concert at one of the many large music venues throughout Oregon or Washington? There is a good chance that venue or event was swept for dangerous weapons by a PDX Bomb Dogs detection team!
Our “handlers” (the humans behind the leash):
Conduct structured, methodical searches.
Interpret trained canine alert behaviors.
Maintain the training, health, and welfare of a detection dog.
Communicate findings clearly and professionally.
Uphold strict safety and ethical standards.
Do You Need a Law Enforcement or Military Background?
No. While the majority of our team comes from either a military, police, or government background, private K9 detection is a civilian career. Many professional handlers come from non-law enforcement or military backgrounds and have very successful careers. Success depends on education, accountability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
How Do You Become a Private K9 Detection Handler?
1. Education & Exposure: Learn about canine behavior and detection. There are some great podcasts out there (eg., “K9s Talking Scents) that can provide foundational knowledge on all things detection dogs.
2. Hands-On Experience: Shadow professionals and assist in training environments. You can apply (information below) to attend one of our training sessions. Additionally, some police department offer community outreach programs.
3. Detection Dog Training: Not all dogs are suitable; training is extensive and ongoing. Picking the right dog is a foundational MUST. Genetics and “drive” matter greatly. However, when you’re starting out, it can be a ton of fun to learn with your pet dog! We suggest looking up K9 Nosework classes that you can attend to get a general idea of the imprinting process. There are also several professional trainers who offer specific detection courses throughout the PNW: Reach out to us for suggestions.
4. Professional Standards: Certification, continued education, and regular evaluation. All of our dogs go through annual independent certifications primarily through a law enforcement organization. Additionally, be prepared to train extensively on a regular basis- It’s more than just odor recognition..Dogs must be environmentally sound in order to be deployable (good around crowds, other dogs, noise).
5: Be prepared to work long hours: A lot of private contract works means you travel to various venues not only in the PNW, but across the country (eg., our teams recently came back from the Superbowl and NBA All Star Game). Days can often exceed 12+ hours working in all sorts of weather. The good news is, a lot of this work allows you to create your own schedule- Some of our handlers still maintain full-time jobs as law enforcement officers and work with us on their days off.
